Acrylic (PMMA – Polymethyl Methacrylate)

Acrylic is a synthetic polymer known as PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), used as the primary surface material for the shell of hot tubs, tubs and wellness equipment. It is a solid, non-porous and UV-stable plastic that can be thermoformed into ergonomic shapes. In hot tub construction, it forms the outer layer that is in direct contact with water and the user. The acrylic is then reinforced with fibreglass to ensure the mechanical strength of the entire structure. Owing to its homogeneous structure, it has high resistance to chemicals, temperature changes and mechanical wear. It is a standard material in quality wellness products because it combines hygiene, appearance and long-term stability.

Advantages of acrylic

  • Smooth, hygienic and non-porous surface: Does not absorb water, bacteria or dirt, which substantially simplifies maintenance.
  • Long-term colour stability and UV resistance: Quality acrylic retains its colour and gloss even after years of outdoor use.
  • High comfort to the touch: The surface is smooth, pleasant and adapts quickly to water temperature.
  • Resistance to chemicals and disinfection: Withstands contact with chlorine, ozone and other disinfectants without degrading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acrylic has higher density, better UV resistance and a longer service life than standard plastics.

Acrylic itself is relatively strong, but it is combined with fibreglass reinforcement for structural stability.

Quality UV-stabilised acrylic does not. Cheaper alternatives can, however, degrade over time.

It has good resistance, but if mechanical damage occurs, the surface can be repaired by polishing.

Typically 15–25 years with correct use and maintenance.

Yes. It contains no pores where bacteria or dirt could accumulate.

No. Routine cleaning with a non-abrasive cleaning agent is sufficient.
