A heat pump is a hot tub water heating device that, instead of converting electrical energy directly into heat, transfers heat from the surrounding air into the water through a refrigeration circuit. The principle is the reverse of a chiller used for cooling. The same technology extracts heat from outdoor air even at low temperatures. Because of this principle, a heat pump can deliver more thermal energy to the water than the electricity it consumes to operate. The unit connects to the hot tub’s filtration circuit and maintains temperature automatically according to the set value. Efficiency drops at very low outdoor temperatures, so heat pumps are often combined with electric backup heating during colder periods.
Advantages of heat pump heating
- Lower electricity consumption than direct heating: Transferring heat from the surrounding air means the unit consumes less energy for the same amount of heat delivered.
- Automatic temperature control: The system maintains the set water temperature without manual intervention.
- Quieter operation in newer models: Quality units are optimised for residential settings with low noise output.
- Longer service life with regular maintenance: A properly maintained refrigeration circuit can operate for many years without a significant loss of efficiency.
