Western Red Cedar is a premium softwood originating from North America, most commonly from the tree Thuja plicata. In wellness and sauna applications, it is used for wall and ceiling cladding and sometimes for exterior structural elements. It is characterised by low density, high dimensional stability and a natural content of aromatic oils and thujaplicins, which have natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. These compounds increase the wood’s resistance to moisture, rot and biological damage without the need for chemical impregnation. Cedar also has very good thermal insulation properties, which helps maintain a stable temperature in the sauna. Owing to its structure and aroma, it is an established material for premium sauna interiors and exteriors.
Advantages of Western Red Cedar
- Natural durability without chemical protection: The content of natural oils and thujaplicins protects the wood against mould, rot and insects without the need for impregnation.
- Exceptional thermal insulation properties: It helps maintain a stable temperature in the sauna, reducing energy losses and heating costs.
- Distinctive natural aroma: When heated, it releases a subtle scent from the natural oils in the wood, without artificial fragrances.
- High dimensional stability and service life: It resists deformation, cracking and volume change under prolonged exposure to heat and moisture.
