Bioclimatic louvres are a pergola roof system made up of aluminium profiles that rotate under motor control through a range of 0° to 140°. Unlike a fixed roof, the angle of the louvres changes during use, so the same space serves at one moment as an open terrace and at another as an enclosed shelter. The louvres sit in a supporting frame with an integrated gutter which, in the closed position, carries water into downpipes routed inside the posts. Drive comes from an electric motor operated by a remote control, a wall panel or an app, often combined with a rain and wind sensor. It is this ability to change the angle of the louvres that gives the system its name – a bioclimatic pergola responds to the weather instead of being exposed to it in one fixed position.


Advantages of bioclimatic louvres

  • Climate control under the pergola: in summer you open the louvres slightly – hot air rises and a natural draught forms beneath the roof through the chimney effect.
  • Protection from rain: in rain the louvres close watertight and the water is carried away by the integrated system, clear of the structure.
  • Light control through the day: rotating the louvres changes both the amount of direct sun and the direction of the shade, so the terrace stays usable from morning until evening.
  • A terrace usable all year: closed louvres extend the season into spring and autumn, when an unroofed terrace cannot be used.

A bioclimatic pergola and other types of roof

Three solutions are usually compared when choosing a terrace roof. They differ in how far they can be adapted to the weather, and therefore in how many days a year the terrace beneath them can be used.

What to settle before ordering

  • Span without an intermediate post. This determines how large an area can be roofed without a post in the middle of the terrace.
  • Snow load. The structure is dimensioned for the snow zone in which it stands.
  • Where the drainage discharges. The downpipe inside the post has to connect to something, ideally while the groundworks are still open.
  • Rain and wind sensors. Without them the louvres close in rain only when someone operates them, which does not work while you are away.
  • Surface finish of the profiles. Powder coating in a RAL shade governs UV resistance and how the pergola matches the other elements.

Frequently Asked Questions

A fixed roof always has the same pitch and the same light transmission. A bioclimatic pergola has rotating louvres, so the shade, the amount of light and the venting of hot air can all be changed through the day, and in rain the roof closes into a watertight position.

In the closed position the louvres interlock and water runs into the integrated gutter in the frame and from there into the downpipes inside the posts. What matters is that the drainage system is correctly dimensioned and clear – a blocked gutter will not carry the water away however well the louvres seal.

The structure is designed for the snow zone of the given location. In heavier snowfall the manufacturer's instructions usually call for the snow to be cleared from the louvres, or the louvres to be opened, so that the load does not build up in one place.

Yes. A remote control or wall panel is standard, and a rain and wind sensor can be added that closes the louvres at the first drops and opens them in strong wind. Some systems are also operated from a mobile app.

With the louvres open they are rinsed with water and, if needed, washed with a mild detergent. Along with the louvres, check the gutter in the frame and the downpipe inlet, where leaves and pine needles collect.
