Ozone Generator (O3 Generator)

An ozone generator produces ozone (O₃) from ambient air using corona discharge or UV radiation technology. In hot tubs, cooling tubs, and small pools, ozone injected through a Venturi injector dissolves in the water, where it acts as a strong oxidising agent. Ozone reacts with bacteria, viruses, moulds, and organic contaminants, breaking them down chemically. Unlike chlorine, it leaves no lasting residual effect – after reacting, it decomposes back into oxygen. It is a supplementary disinfection system that reduces the load on the primary chemistry. Correct effectiveness depends on mixing, contact time, and water quality.

Advantages of an ozone generator

  • Significantly lower chlorine or bromine consumption: Ozone oxidises organic contamination before it breaks down into by-products, reducing the required dose of disinfection chemicals.
  • Higher clarity and less water odour: Breaking down organic contaminants such as sweat, oils, and cosmetics reduces cloudiness and the typical chemical smell of the water.
  • Faster breakdown of microorganisms than chlorine: Ozone is a strong oxidising agent and, with correct contact with the water, acts faster than standard chlorine disinfection.
  • No chemical residue after reaction: Ozone decomposes back into oxygen after it acts, leaving no long-persisting by-products in the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Ozone has no residual effect in water. A small amount of secondary disinfection is still needed as protection between filtration cycles.

Yes, if the system is installed correctly. Ozone must dissolve in the water, and any excess must be neutralised before the water returns to the tub.

Corona discharge generators have a service life of approximately 3–5 years; UV generators shorter (the lamp is usually replaced every 12–24 months).

Energy consumption is low (typically 5–30 W). Savings on chemicals often offset the cost of the equipment.

Not with correct settings. A strong smell indicates insufficient dissolution or a technical problem.

Corona discharge produces a higher ozone concentration and is more effective for larger water volumes. UV systems are simpler but less powerful.

Yes. UV-C inactivates microorganisms, ozone oxidises organics. The combination raises the hygiene standard and minimises chemical load.
