UV-C sterilisation is a physical water disinfection method using ultraviolet radiation at a wavelength of approximately 254 nm. Water in a sauna, hot tub, or cooling tub flows through a sealed chamber containing a quartz sleeve housing a UV-C lamp. The radiation disrupts the DNA and RNA of microorganisms, preventing further reproduction. It is neither filtration nor chemical oxidation – it inactivates pathogens at the molecular level. The technology is adapted from drinking-water treatment plants and hospital facilities. Effectiveness depends on radiation intensity, water flow rate, and water clarity.
Advantages of UV-C sterilisation
- No added chemicals: No extra chlorine, bromine, or other disinfectants. The water’s taste and smell remain unchanged, and it does not irritate skin or eyes.
- Immediate inactivation of microorganisms: When correctly sized, a UV-C system can neutralise bacteria, viruses, and algae in a single pass of water through the chamber.
- Chemical consumption reduced by tens of per cent: UV-C does not fully replace oxidation, but it significantly reduces the need for chlorine or bromine, lowering long-term operating costs.
- Higher hygiene standard for family use: Combined with an ozone generator, it creates a double barrier – UV-C inactivates pathogens while ozone breaks down organic contaminants.
